Members of English Speaking Families in Kassel e.V. are a group of close-knit families who share a common thread: we speak English at home and we’re raising our children in or around Kassel.
Membership gives you and your family access to our monthly gatherings, our supportive community network, and the friendships that come from finding your people.
What Membership Includes
Monthly Family Gatherings
Once a month on a Saturday morning, we come together to talk, share a meal, and participate in activities built around English language and cultures. Each meeting includes a picture book reading and an activity to get the kids thinking and speaking in English.
The activities at our gatherings are designed with children aged three and up in mind, but families with babies and toddlers are very much part of our community too. For the older kids already involved, we foster age-appropriate leadership opportunities, such as helping younger children with crafts and games.
While most of the children in the club are currently between the ages of zero and six, we are actively increasing the number of school-aged children (ages 6-10) who participate. If you are a family with children in this age range who is interested in membership, please do not hesitate to reach out to us!
Parents attend meetings with their children and actively participate in the group. They read to the children, lead or suggest activities, or socialize with other parents during free play — everyone is welcome to contribute in a way that fits their comfort and schedule.

A Supportive Network
Beyond scheduled events, membership connects you to a community that understands your family’s unique situation. We share recommendations, offer advice, and are there for each other. We often hold informal kids’ clothing swaps, plan meals trains for families with new babies, and hold further group activities like camping trips and seasonal parties.
Language Confidence and Belonging for Children
For children at the age when they might otherwise drift away from English—when German feels easier, when fitting in matters most—our group offers something powerful: other kids who speak English too. This normalizes English as a living, social language rather than just something spoken at home with parents.
English-Language Birthday Cards
Each child in the Verein receives an English language birthday card each year. This deepens their community connection and gives them a joyful experience of English communication through written language.
Leadership Opportunities
Member families are responsible for participating in the life of the club. This can take the form of helping with clean-up at the end of events, bringing shared snacks, or even taking on leadership roles, such as reading at a story hour, leading a members’ meeting, planning and hosting an activity for a specific age group of kids within the club, serving on the board, etc. It’s flexible and adaptable to each family’s needs, while also giving opportunities for each person to shine in their element.

Who We Welcome
We embrace families from all backgrounds and from all countries. Our members already represent ten different nationalities, and that number is growing along with our membership.
Current member families include:
- Families with one German parent and one international parent
- A parent whose father spoke English with them, and who now wants to share that family tradition with their child
- A German family whose children were born in the US and spent the early years of their lives speaking English as their community language
- German families who regularly speak English in the home using the one-person-one-language method of language sharing
What all member families have in common is a strong commitment to speaking the English language in the home with their kids, and the desire to connect with others who are doing the same.
Whether you’re a native speaker, raising multilingual children, or have chosen English as your family’s additional language—if English is significant within your family, you’re welcome here.
