Bilingual Story Hour

Open to the public · Ages 3-6 (younger and older siblings welcome) · All levels of English welcome

About Story Hour

Once a month, we host a Bilingual Story Hour open to all families in Kassel—members and non-members alike. A fluent/native English speaker and a fluent/native German speaker read a picture book aloud to the group, alternating between languages page by page. Afterward, children enjoy a simple, fun craft activity related to the story.

This recurring event is designed for families with any level of English comprehension. Whether your child is fluent, just beginning to hear English, or somewhere in between, Story Hour offers a gentle, joyful introduction to bilingual storytelling.

The world of English-language children’s literature is wide, and in this event we will strive to share original English-language stories from a diverse range of cultures and perspectives from around the globe. We are passionate about promoting intercultural tolerance and awareness, and engaging children in dialogue about these topics.

What to Expect

  • Duration: Approximately one hour
  • Format: Bilingual book reading followed by a craft activity
  • Languages: English and German, page by page
  • Suitable for: Children of all ages and English levels

Important Information for Families

Story Hour is a family event—children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver throughout. We ask that adults remain responsible for their children during the reading and craft time.

If a child becomes disruptive, we kindly ask that the family step outdoors until the child is ready to rejoin the group calmly. We appreciate your understanding in helping create a peaceful atmosphere for all participants.

Donations are welcome and help us continue offering this community event.
